NSW: Fire officer tells of horror at smash scene

A rescue worker who attended yesterday's horrific 10-vehicle smash in Sydney's north
says the chaotic scene resembled a war zone.

Dee Why fire station officer ROD FITZGERALD describes the fiery crash site at Dee Why
as one of the worst he's ever seen.

An 11-month-old baby boy died later from burns he'd received in the smash, when a dump
truck allegedly ran out of control on a steep incline at the junction of Warringah and
Pittwater roads, and crashed into a line of cars.

The baby's mother and three-year-old brother are also injured.

Mr FITZGERALD has praised the heroic actions of former Australian rugby league representative
and police officer Don McKinnon, who reached into a burning car to rescue the baby.

A 27-year-old man, from Punchbowl in Sydney's south west, has been charged with negligent
driving, causing death, and is due to appear in Manly Local Court on May 4.
