President Bush said Monday that allied forces were moving quickly toward their objective, freeing Kuwait from Iraqi occupation.
"We have the initiative. We intend to keep it," he said.
He said there were battles yet to come, but also said, "Kuwait will soon be free."
Bush, who had kept continuously updated by his generals on the progress of the war, told a White House audience the campaign was "on course and on schedule."
He also had telephoned praise for early victories to Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, the Desert Storm commander.
